In the world of triple-net REITs, most of the attention in the past week has been on the planned merger of American Capital Realty Properties (ARCP) and Cole Real Estate Investments (COLE). I recently wrote about ARCP, noting that the REIT had seen heavy insider buying over the summer ��at prices higher than today��. I also recommended the stock based on its growth prospects within a sector I love and its high dividend yield — 6.7% at today�� prices.
ARCP fell on the news on the COLE merger, which is typical for the acquiring firm (as a general rule, the acquirer falls and the acquired rises). But I continue to see value in REITs and ARCP in particular.
Today, however, I want to highlight other insider buying for REITs, namely, in a competitor of ARCP and COLE:�Stag Industrial (STAG).
The scale of the insider buying of STAG is considerably smaller than that of ARCP. But its scope is every bit as wide, as six company officers have made purchases in the past quarter. As you can see from STAG�� insider trading history, the company�� officers have been steadily and consistently accumulating the shares over the past year.

SPDR Trust, Series 1 (the Trust) is a unit investment trust. 2. Hedge fund performance has been weak lately.
Inevitably, hedge funds will tout whatever performance numbers put them in the best light. But at least recently, they haven't been able to deliver an advantage over less exclusive investment vehicles. According to Bianco Research, one popular index of hedge fund performance has underperformed the universally investable SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: SPY ) by 50 percentage points since the end of 2010. High-profile hedge funds like John Paulson's gold fund have been in the news lately because of their massive losses that haven't compared favorably to bullion ETF SPDR Gold (NYSEMKT: GLD ) or to the mining-company ETF Market Vectors Gold Miners (NYSEMKT: GDX ) . - [By Jonas Elmerraji]
First up, a look at the big picture in stocks through the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY). SPY is the most investible proxy for the S&P -- and the fund has accumulated more than $150 billion in assets as a result. A quick glance at this chart is all you need to see that there's room left in this rally.
Stocks have spent all of 2013 in a very well defined uptrend. And while that uptrend has been tested more than a few times on the way up, it hasn't been violated. So while the latest correction in the broad market has dropped SPY down near support, it looks a whole lot more like a buying opportunity than a reason to run from stocks. Support has been a whole lot more solid than resistance over the course of this rally; that suggests that SPY can still catch a bid.
That said, I think it's probably a little too early to take a hard buying stand on SPY. Those tests of support in the last year have been really tough tests -- most have even violated the trendline intraday. This correction can move a little lower before bulls need to start sweating. Then I'd recommending buying on the bounce off of support.

The S&P 500 (SPY) rose last week following a very weak August as traders returned from the long weekend and re-adjusted probabilities of a Syria strike as President Obama decided to seek Congressional approval. The Fed's Beige Book emphasized moderate growth, auto sales came in better than expected, and ISM manufacturing was strong. None of this, however, translated into the Friday jobs report, which was highly disappointing. Not only did the August data miss expectations with whisper numbers considerably higher, but prior month revisions were lower. Some economists have argued the data was "just good enough" to keep the Fed on course for tapering, while others think tapering will be pushed out. Either way, the data seems to have complicated the Fed's expected timeline for pulling back on QE fully.

Once again, rather than making a wish on burning match bets, I prefer to buy out of favor companies at a steep discount to their asset and business value. And a�look at the silver miners shows deep discounts to the value of corporate assets that could lead to significant profits.
Pan American Silver (PAAS) trades at just 65% of book value and has fallen by about 75% over the past few years. Couer Mines (CDE) is fetching just 54% of book and has fallen by around 80% since 2006. Silver Standard Resources (SSRI) trades at 55% of book and for less than the value of the cash the company has in the bank.In reality, silver just needs to stop falling in price for these stocks to start to recover. An under-$10 basic materials player that's starting to move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Silver Standard Resources (SSRI), which engages in the acquisition, exploration, development and operation of silver-dominant resource properties principally in the Americas. This stock has been hammered by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off by 59%.
If you take a look at the chart for Silver Standard Resources, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending modestly for the last few weeks, with shares moving higher from its low of $5.47 to its recent high of $6.27 a share. During that uptrend, shares of SSRI have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of SSRI within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.
Market players should now look for long-biased trades in SSRI if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $6.27 to $6.38 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.75 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then SSRI will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $7.55 to its 200-day moving average at $7.81 a share.
Traders can look to buy SSRI off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some near-term support at $5.47 a share. One can also buy SSRI off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

On Tuesday, Goldman Sachs reported that it has downgraded National Bank Holdings Corp (NBHC) to “Sell.”
The firm has cut its rating on NBHC from “Neutral” to “Sell,” and has given the company a $21 price target. This price target suggests that the stock will remain flat at its current price of $20.94.
An analyst from the firm commented: “While we believe that NBHC can grow EPS longer term as it leverages its $400mn of excess capital (above 10% tier 1 leverage), with shares trading at 1.1x TBV, we see limited upside in the near-term without any strategic M&A.”
Looking ahead, the firm has maintained its FY2013 EPS estimate of 26 cents. For FY2014 and FY2015, estimates have been maintained at 57 cents and $1.88.

2. Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) The REIT is another alternative vehicle that's gone mainstream in recent years. Hundreds of broad-based and specialized real estate companies and ETFs are available, and after a correction a few months ago, many are on the cheap side. Like any other alternative, this should be a seasoning for your portfolio and not the sauce itself. For most retail investors, a stake in an indexed fund like the SPDR Dow Jones REIT (NYSE: RWR) should be more than adequate, or look into the companies that provide services to the REIT industry like HFF (NYSE: HF) and Jones Lang LaSalle (NYSE: JLL).
